The Readington Township Police Department is accepting applications for the position of Police Officer. The Readington Township Police Department is a full-service police organization comprised of 24 sworn, full-time police officers. Sworn officers are New Jersey Police Training Commission Certified and have full power and authority to make arrests, investigate crimes and carry firearms.
We are seeking men and women with good character, sound judgment, reliability and integrity combined with excellent communication skills to serve our community.
Essential Duties and Functions of a patrol officer
Respond to calls for assistance and emergencies, apprehend, detain, process and arrest individuals who violate New Jersey law, interacts with and establishes rapport with the community, testifies in court cases as necessary and work rotating shifts. Police officers may be called back to duty in emergency situations and are required to work weekends, nights and holidays as needed by the department.

POLICE OFFICER APPLICANTS
In order to be eligible to meet our agency’s criteria, a candidate MUST meet the following minimum requirements. There are no exceptions!
- Be a citizen of the United States
- Be between the ages of 18-35
- Have a valid New Jersey Drivers License (Required prior to employment)
- Be of good moral character
- Be a resident of New Jersey at time of appointment
- Visual acuity not less than 20/50 in each eye corrected to 20/20 with normal color perception
- Normal auditory acuity
- Have at least 60 College credits from an accredited College or University or have completed four years active military service concluding with an honorable discharge. (All College requirements must be established by date of hire.
SALARY
- Certified $67,762 (2021 Contract)
- Entry Level - Academy Rate TBD
- Transfers - can negotiate salary based on experience.

Phase I. Physical Agility Examination
- The first Phase of the process will be a physical agility exam. Those that are not certified and Special Law Enforcement Officer II’s that are eligible to receive a waiver from the New Jersey Police Training Commission must complete Phase I successfully. The date, time and location of the physical agility exam is TBD. You will be notified through www.policeapp.com You must bring a signed copy of all required forms.
The Physical Training Assessment will consist of the following:
- 1.5 mile run in 15:55 minutes or less
- 24 pushups in one (1) minute
- 28 sit ups in one (1) minute
- 300 Meter Run in 70.1 seconds or less
- Vertical Jump of at least fifteen (15) inches
Included in this job posting is an Applicant Acknowledgement and Medical Certification Form which will need to be completed by a physician prior to participating in the Physical Training Assessment. This form must be presented to staff on test date.
Current NJ PTC certified officers and recruits currently attending a police academy are not required to participate in the physical agility exam and will begin at Phase 2.
Phase II. Oral Interview / Background Investigation
This phase will consist of the following steps:
- Panel Interview conducted by members of the police department and Director of Public Safety
- Interview with the Township Committee/Administrator
- Background Investigation
The order of these steps will be determined at the time of testing.
Phase III. Selected candidates will then be required to pass a thorough medical and psychological exam, including a drug screening consistent with the Attorney General's Guideline for Law Enforcement Drug Testing . Any medical or physical condition or defect which would prevent efficient performance of the position of police officer will be cause for rejection.
If you successfully pass all applicable portions of the selection process and are selected you must complete a six-month Basic Police Academy within one year of appointment, if not already certified.
